Multiple sclerosis – Foods to avoid
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a progressive disorder of the central nervous system. It predominantly affects the brain and spinal cord that may result in permanent nerve damage. The symptoms of this condition develop over time. Although it is not curable, it can be managed by following a strict food regimen. Here is a list of foods to avoid to manage the symptoms of multiple sclerosis and improve one’s quality of life.
Processed meats like sausages
Meat is a good source of protein, but when cooked using certain techniques, it can release compounds that may trigger flare ups among those with MS. For example, cooking any kind of meat on a high flame (barbeque), curing it with salt, and smoking beef, sausage, pork release compounds that affect the delicate balance of minerals and nutrients necessary for building strong immunity. Processed meats put pressure on the digestive system and worsen multiple sclerosis symptoms, like inflammation.
Processed foods and foods high in saturated and trans fats
Most foods found in a supermarket are laced with preservatives, additives, artificial flavoring, and other compounds intended to extend their shelf life. In addition to this, processed foods contain high amounts of saturated and trans fats. Many of the confectionaries are made with hydrogenated vegetable oils, shortening, and margarine. Frying foods is also not a better option, as the body, in its weakened state, cannot cope with the high concentration of trans fats that need to be processed. A food regimen high in fat can raise cholesterol levels, consequently increasing one’s likelihood of getting atherosclerosis, which is a risk factor for multiple sclerosis.
Foods rich in refined carbohydrates like cereals
The body has to break down foods to release energy and support vital organs and their functioning. Foods rich in refined carbohydrates, like cereals, are empty calories, which means they have been stripped of all essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber necessary for the body. Such foods also have a high GI (Glycemic Index) and can trigger spikes in blood sugar levels that add to existing problems in chronic conditions like multiple sclerosis.
Sweet foods like pastries
Excess sugar consumption leads to fatigue, a common symptom observed in those with multiple sclerosis. Different types of sweets, baked goods, confectioneries, and anything that contains excess sugar are bad for those with multiple sclerosis. Sodas and other sweetened beverages are laced with preservatives and artificial flavoring. Having excess sugary foods can cause tiredness. So limiting sugar from one’s meals can help manage symptoms of this condition.
Alcoholic beverages
Alcohol, when consumed in excess, can raise blood pressure levels. The compounds in these beverages can accelerate neurological damage and trigger flare ups of multiple sclerosis. Being in an inebriated state can worsen balance problems and increase the frequency of urination. Studies show that alcohol can affect the spinal cord and brain.
In addition to staying away from such foods, one can also rely on medicines to manage MS symptoms.
PONVORY™ (ponesimod)
PONVORY™ is an oral prescription medication administered for the treatment of relapsing forms of MS in adults. The medication can also be used to manage clinically isolated syndrome, active secondary progressive MS, and relapsing-remitting MS. The pill must be taken once daily, and doctors allow most patients to take the first dose at home. Studies suggest that people who took PONVORY™ showed a significant reduction in average relapses per year.
