Body Mass Index (BMI)

BMI is calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by height in meters squared. It was designed as a population-level screening tool, not an individual diagnostic. The standard adult categories are: underweight (<18.5), normal weight (18.5–24.9), overweight (25–29.9), and obese (≥30). BMI is widely used because it requires no equipment and correlates moderately with health risk at a group level — but it cannot distinguish muscle from fat, nor does it reflect where fat is distributed in the body.
